NRA Basic Courses
Introduction
In addition to teaching Firearm Safety, our courses cover Proper Firearm Use and Storage, How to Choose a Handgun that is right for you, the different types of handguns, the advantages and disadvantages of each, handgun terminology and ammunition, and shooting fundamentals [stance, grip, sight alignment, trigger squeeze], and more.
The New Shooter / Handgun Intro Classes are typically 4 hours long.
In addition to classroom lessons, The Firearms Fundamentals Class and NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation include range time where you will shoot .22LR and 9MM pistols.
Of course, you may bring your handgun and ammo which can be used at the end of the training class.

NRA New Shooter Seminar
This 4-hour NRA seminar covers the most popular modern firearms: rifles, shotguns, and pistols. The seminar covers the basics of firearm actions, terminology, parts, ammunition, Firearm Safety, and needed accessories. Learn what to expect and what is needed for your first firearm purchase, your first trip to the range, and how to move forward with different programs in the shooting community. This will be a classroom-only seminar (non-live fire) using actual firearms for demonstration.
Firearms Fundamentals
This 4-hour non-NRA course was developed specifically for the new or novice shooter, someone who has been away from the shooting sport for some time, or someone simply wanting to sharpen their shooting skills. Lessons taught include NRA’s Gun Safety Rules; Revolver and Semi-Automatic Pistol Parts; Ammunition and Storage; Range Commands, Range Safety and Etiquette; Understanding Eye Dominance; Shooting Fundamentals; Firearm Malfunctions; Range Exercises/Drills; Gun Cleaning; Personal Hygiene; Proper Gun Storage; and Continued Learning Opportunities.
NRA Home Firearm Safety
This 4-hour in-classroom non-shooting course teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. Students are taught NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the primary causes of firearm accidents; firearm parts; how to load and unload various action types; ammunition components; firearm cleaning and care; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, and a course completion certificate.
NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation
FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation is the NRA’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for new purchasers.
The Course provides a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type [typically .22LR and 9MM semi-automatic pistols], for classes of four or fewer students. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and FIRST Steps Course completion certificate.
NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting
The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience.
Training is available via two options.
Option One is a traditional, instructor-led course. You receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor from beginning to end takes place in a classroom and range environment. This course is completed in an estimated 10 hours.
Option Two Blended training format provides students the ability to complete much of the traditional classroom training at their own pace in an online, eLearning environment. After successfully completing the self-study portion, the student takes a hands-on practical portion conducted in a classroom and shooting range with an Instructor.
Course topics include gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. Additionally, students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an NRA Certified Instructor.
Students will receive the NRA Guide: Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor.
