Overview
Training often and with a purpose is critical to becoming a safe, effective, and efficient shooter.
Too often when I speak with students, I'm told their pistol has been locked away in the closet for a long time. Shooting is a perishable skill that must regularly be exercised and practiced for you to be safe and effective.
In my many years in the shooting sport and now as a Firearms Instructor and NRA Counselor teaching safety and shooting skills, I've been an ardent follower, supporter, and enthusiast of several world-class teachers and competitors.
Several of those that I follow, I have bookmarked for you below. They are Masad Ayoob, Dave Spaulding, Rob Pinkus, Ben Stoeger, Jerry Miculek, Ken Hackathorn, and Richard Nance. Most recently, several women world-class shooters and teachers have joined this cadre, including Julie Golob, Jessie Duff Harrison, and Lena Miculek.
Of course, there are many others and each has its style and method.
As they stress, your training focus should be to train regularly with consistency, with purpose, and for real life.
Below is information and links to some of the resources that have provided me value and that I believe will give you the greatest opportunity to develop and hone your skills.
Massad F. Ayoob is a firearm and self-defense instructor. He has taught police techniques and civilian self-defense to both law enforcement officers and private citizens since 1974. Ayoob has appeared as an expert witness in several trials.
Dave Spaulding is a professional firearms instructor with 36 years of experience in Law Enforcement and Federal Security, Crime Scene Investigations, Court Security, Violent Crime Investigation, Undercover Operations, SWAT, training, and dignitary protection.
“I.C.E.” Stands for Integrity, Consistency, and Efficiency, the hallmarks of the programs, courses, and services provided by
Rob Pinkus.
I.C.E. Training is a full-service company offering training to armed professionals and those interested in self-defense.
Widely considered to be the greatest shooter of all time, Jerry Miculek holds many accomplishments and 11 World records. Indoor ranges typically don’t allow holster draw or rapid fire. This can limit your training but doesn't completely prevent it. While live fire is important, another excellent option is "dry fire"
Rob Leatham is a world-renowned professional competition shooter and highly sought-after firearms instructor. Rob's record-setting career has spanned four decades in the competitive shooting world. He has trained shooters from all walks of life including IPSC World Champions,
Military Teams, Federal, State, and Local Law Enforcement Agencies and civilians for self-defense.
Ben Stoeger is an IPSC World Champion and multiple-time USPSA National Champion.
In 2005 Ben discovered and began the sport of Practical Shooting. This instantly became an addiction. Ben began training diligently and used dry fire as the primary source of training. He soon achieved USPSA Grand Master. In 2008, Ben began educating and training students. He became a traveling shooter/instructor and published a series of highly regarded books on his ideas and techniques.
Ken Hackathorn has served as a US Army Special Forces Small Arms Instructor, Gunsite Instructor, and NRA Police Firearms Instructor. He is currently an FBI Certified Firearms Instructor, Certified Deputy Sheriff with Washington County, Ohio, and a Special Response Team Member and Trainer. He has provided training to Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies and has been active in small arms training for the past 25 years. Ken has written and published for Guns & Ammo, Combat Handguns, Soldier of Fortune, American Handgunner, and at least six other gun/shooting journals. Ken was a founding member of IPSC and IDPA.
Richard Nance is a 20-year Northern California police officer and Police Sergeant, SWAT Team Leader, Firearms Instructor, Patrol Rifle Instructor, Less Than Lethal Munitions Instructor, Taser Instructor, Karate Blackbelt, and more.
He is the co-owner of Weapon Acquisition & Retention Tactics (WARTAC). A company that provides unarmed counter-weapon tactics to citizens, as well as law enforcement, military, and security personnel enabling persons to maintain control of their firearms during close-quarter combat.
Nance cohosts Handguns & Defensive Weapons, on the Sportsman Channel. He is author of “gunFIGHT”, a book focused on the integrated approach to gun fighting in close quarters as well as a contributor to Guns & Ammo Magazine and Handguns Magazine.
